Body Type

What’s the normal pulse rate? It can be 60 per minute; and for some of us, it can be as high as 100 per minute. Is your pulse rhythmic like the swimming of a swan? Or it moves like a snake? Or it jumps like a frog? Can you feel its temperature? Is it cold or warm? Why the pulse of human does vary from person to person? It is not just the pulse rate; skin color, hair type, climatic preference, food habits, dislikes, behavior, emotional expressions etc of human being varies from person to person. Every human is being a unique individual, full of idiosyncrasies and peculiarities. You are unlike any other human being in the past, present or future. Each human is a unique manifestation of the Creative Energy of the Nature.

Ayurveda use the word “Svastha” to denote Healthy.

  • Sva = Self
  • Stha = Established
  • Svastha = Established in the Self

The mentioned term Self is the Ego (not the Freudian ego); the power of individual identity, which separates every being from another being. This power which forever reminds me that “I am I” is called Ahamkara (I former). Today’s physicians tend to ignore individuality. They often look at people as livers or lungs and neglect the organism that hosts that liver or lung. The ancient sages observed that although every individual has the three doshas, each of us inherits them in differing proportions. This accounts for our differences in appearance, preferences, aversions, behavioral patterns, and emotional tendencies. On account of these differences Ayurveda categorize human into 7 basic body types. They are:

  1. Vatha constitution
  2. Pitha constitution
  3. Kapha constitution
  4. Vatha Pitha constitution
  5. Vatha Kapha constitution
  6. Pitha Kapha constitution
  7. Vatha Pitha Kapha constitution

The basic knowledge of the body type helps one to determine the most auspicious lifestyle that will ensure wellness and longevity: appropriate foods, herbs, exercise regimes, medicines, therapies, and even suitable professions. Knowing one’s constitution holds the key to health, liberation and ultimately, self-realization.

Body Type Analysis – Questionnaire

To determine your own individual constitution you will need to evaluate yourself as unbiased, accurately and honestly. Evaluate as how you are; avoid temptation to see yourself as you would like to be. Give rating based on a long term evaluation (over a period of 1-5 years) than how you feel now. A disease symptom is different from a constitution sign and symptom. You may not be of just one Dosha; most fit predominantly into one and sometimes secondarily into another and rarely into the third.
